Hoare was apprenticed to the painter and sculptor Giuseppe Grisoni, with whom he travelled to Rome in 1728. He returned to England temporarily around 1733 and permanently four years later. Moving to Bath in 1739, he become the first fashionable portraitist to settle in that town.
