Watkins's photograph was originally taken for his National Gallery of Photographic Portraits but not issued as part of this series. In a letter to Herbert Fry (1 June 1858) Millais wrote of this portrait: 'The profile is much the best of the two, and considered by all an admirable likeness'. Millais was created a baronet in 1885 and succeeded Frederic Leighton as President of the Royal Academy in 1896.
