Irving appeared as the villainous Digby Grant in James Albery's comedy Two Roses at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1870. His performance was rapturously received and the production ran for almost 300 nights. It was Irving's first taste of success. An enthusiastic notice in the Globe newspaper was perhaps the first to declare that 'Mr. Irving has no rival upon the English stage'.
