Chairman of Glyndebourne Productions (1956-99), and Founder and Chairman of the London Sinfonietta. From 1987 until 1992 he was a Member of the Arts Council and Chairman of its Music Panel. He was appointed a Companion of Honour for his services to opera and to Glyndebourne in 2001.
