An organic Chemist, Jones was Waynfleet Professor of Chemistry at Oxford University, 1955-78. He published widely on the structure and synthesis of natural products, particularly steroids, terpenes and vitamins, and also gave his name to 'Jones Oxidation', the chromic acid oxidation of secondary alcohols to ketones in acetone. Jones chaired numerous academic and public committees and won several awards, including the Davy Medal of the Royal Society. He was instrumental in the formation of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 1980.
