Pakenham's great moment came at the battle of Salamanca in July 1812; his division, concealed from the over-extended French, was ordered by Wellington to attack: 'Ned,d'ye see those fellows on the hill? Throw your division into column; at them and drive them to the devil.' He did, and the victory was assured. Pakenham rendered Wellington further service as head of military police, effectively suppressing rape and pillage.
