Began career as a freelance gardening journalist in 1988 and became a broadcaster on television in 1989, with presenting work on This Morning and Channel 4 programmes Real Gardens, Fork to Fork, Lost Gardens and Don Roaming. He became Gardening Editor for The Observer in 1994 for which he also writes a regular column.
