Author and critic. L.P. Hartley's reputation was established with collections of short stories published from the mid-1920s, but it was the Eustace and Hilda trilogy (1944-7) that won him critical admiration. His best-known novel, The Go-Between (1953) reached a wide audience with Joseph Losey's film adaptation in 1970.
