Having trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Dench joined the Old Vic Company in 1957. An associate member of the Royal Shakespeare Company since 1969, she has appeared in productions including Twelfth Night, The Winter's Tale and Much Ado About Nothing. She also became familiar to television audiences in the long-running BBC sitcom As Time Goes By (1992-2005), starring alongside Geoffrey Palmer.
