Apprenticed to a merchant in Lisbon, where he spent twelve years. He returned to London in 1741; in 1743 he joined the Russia Company and spent the next seven years in Russia and Persia. Hanway came to prominence in 1753 on the publication of the narrative of his travels. He thereafter devoted himself to philanthropy.
