Herbert had joined the Royal Court at its inception in 1956 as a scene-painter, but already a year later made her debut as a designer with Ionesco's The Chairs. Her pioneering spare and unfussy approach reflected the new style the English Stage Company had introduced to British theatre and she soon developed into one of the leading stage designers in the country. At 'the Court' she worked on new material by John Arden, Arnold Wesker, John Osborne, Samuel Beckett and... more
