A leading bridge player, Macleod turned to politics after the Second World War. He unsuccessfully contested a seat at the 1945 general election and then joined the Conservative Parliamentary Secretariat. He was elected MP in 1950. In the Eden and Macmillan governments, he served first as Minister of Labour and National Service and then as Secretary of State for the Colonies.
