This eighteenth century engraving shows a detail from the portrait of Johnson and his wife and son, which was painted in London in about 1637 by the Dutch artist Adriaan Hanneman. Hanneman lived in England from 1626 to 1638, and probably worked in Anthony Van Dyck's studio in Blackfriars, close to Johnson's own home. Johnson and Hanneman were both part of a community of first and second generation craftspeople from the northern and southern Netherlands living in London at that time.
