by Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt

Charles Cornwallis entered Parliament in 1695. Like his fellow members of the Kit-Cat Club, he favoured the Whig party, supporters of the Revolution of 1689 and the power of parliament against absolutist monarchy. Under George I he held posts in the government, but he had little influence on public affairs. He was described as 'a gentleman of sweet disposition, a great lover of the constitution, and well esteemed in his native county of Suffolk'.
