Began writing as a student at Cambridge and is best known for Mr Norris Changes Trains (1935) and Goodbye to Berlin (1939) which reflected his experience of living in pre-war Germany. The latter was adapted by John Kander and Fred Ebb into the stage musical Cabaret(1968) and in 1972 into the film staring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles.
