Jones studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before enlisting in the army in 1915. After the war he trained as an engraver with Eric Gill, at Ditchling, Sussex. In 1928, he joined the Seven and Five Society, a society of watercolourists and painters headed by Ben Nicholson, including Christopher Wood and Ivon Hitchens.
