John was born in Lokoja, Nigeria and Studied at Fourah Bay College, Freetown and the University of Durham (1883-4). Ordained in 1902, he became Principal of the CMS Grammar School, Freetown 1920 until 1933, Canon of St George's Cathedral, Freetown in 1924 and sub-Dean in 1929.
