Thomas Baring was MP for Great Yarmouth then Huntingdon. He worked in insurance becoming the Chairman of Lloyds from 1830-1868. Baring made a substantial amount of wealth from the compensation awarded to slave owners after the abolition of slavery as he held several mortgages on plantations in then British Guiana.
