The daughter of a musician, Furtado was well-known as the heroine of various stage melodramas. She is pictured here in 'The Chain of Crime', a romantic drama performed at Astley's Theatre. 'The Times' described the 'immense sensation' the play created with 'a ship, fully manned and rigged, in a storm - struck by lightning and sinking'. Such scenes were typical of the 'sensation dramas' popular during the 1860s.
