After studying at Oxford, Inglis travelled extensively, and cultivated literary, historical, and scientific interests, becoming a fellow of the Royal Society and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was involved with numerous philanthropic, religious and educational societies, and over his lifetime published many devotional works and parliamentary speeches. He was elected as an MP in 1824 and the defence of Protestantism and the Anglican Church dominated his parliamentary life.
