After studying at Oxford, Inglis travelled extensively, and cultivated literary, historical, and scientific interests, becoming a fellow of the Royal Society and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He was involved with numerous philanthropic, religious and educational societies, and over his lifetime published many devotional works and parliamentary speeches.
