A soldier in the Royal Engineers throughout his career, Jones had seen action in the Peninsula War and served in a wide variety of posts up to the beginning of the Crimean War. In December 1854 he was called to Constntinople to be commandant there but, on his arrival, was ordered to join the army at Sebastopol.
