The great-grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. She had a reputation for sweetness of disposition, and was said to play the role of peacemaker in the often stormy royal household. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse; the couple lived at Darmstadt, Hesse and had seven children.
