Born on November 15, Tewfiq was the eldest son of Khedive Ismail and Princess Shafiq-Nur. He was raised and educated in Egypt, unlike his younger brothers who were sent to Europe to be educated. His father successfully altered the traditional order of succession to the Khedivate of Egypt where previously it would have passed on to the eldest living male relative, it now passed on from father to son.
