Francis Pym was elected as a Conservative MP in 1961 and remained in the House of Commons until being raised to the peerage as Baron Pym in 1987. He worked as a Whip before being appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland in 1973. He later served as Defence Secretary and was Foreign Secretary during the Falklands Crisis on 1982.
