Prior to the war, Lady Baird worked as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. With the outbreak of war she volunteered and served as a nurse in Belgian and English hospitals. In recognition of her work she received five war decorations and had her name added to the roll of honourable service of the Red Cross Society.
