Oliver was the daughter of a scene-painter, and she appeared on stage for the first time when she was just six years old. She made her London début when she was thirteen. She became the leading actress in comedy and burlesque for several seasons at the Strand Theatre, where her parts included Amy Robsart in Ye Queen, ye Earl, and ye Maiden.
