Drury embarked on a military career during King Henry VIII's invasion of France in 1544. He acted on diplomatic missions for Queen Mary, but attained greater responsibility under Queen Elizabeth I. He was sent to Edinburgh in 1559 where he provided a link between the Elizabethan regime and the Scottish lords.
