Physician and discoverer of the malaria parasite. Born in Nepal, Ross studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and entered the Indian medical service in 1881. The death toll from malaria amongst military personnel serving in India, West Africa or the Caribbean outnumbered deaths in military action.
