Malcolm began his career in India at the age of thirteen, when he began working for the East Company, the trading body that held the reins of Britain's Indian territories. He held various diplomatic and military positions and became an invaluable envoy of Marquess Wellesley, the Governor-General and a close ally of Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). Malcolm spoke fluent Persian and published a popular history of Persia in 1815.
