Arthur Sloggett was educated at King's College, London before entering the army as a surgeon. Between 1911 and 1914 he served as Director of Medical Services in India and, in 1914, he went to France as Director of Medical Services on the Western Front (1914-18). Sloggett provided inspiring leadership to meet the new challenges of trench warfare, contributing to disease prevention, sanitation and effective care of wounded soldiers.
