Born in Windsor, Williams's first poetry collection Symptoms of Loss was published in 1965 and was awarded an Eric Gregory Award. Williams attributes his early interest in writing to the letters he wrote home from school while at Eton, the collection Writing Home, 1985 drawing directly from these experiences. His work favours simple language and is concerned with everyday human relationships. He writes a column in the Times Literary Supplement and his poetry collection Dear Room was shortlisted for the 2006 Costa Poetry Award.
