Lord Bath's flair for publicity made the opening of Longleat House to the public with the addition of a safari park (1966) a huge success. Previously a Conservative MP for Frome (1931-35). As a national celebrity he was often referred to as 'Britain's slimmest peer' and 'the tallest peer' and was sometimes mistaken for the gardener.
