Lansdowne is unusual for having held senior positions in both Liberal Party and Conservative Party governments. He entered the House of Lords as a member of the Liberal Party in 1866 and served in various positions before being appointed Governor-General of Canada in 1883. From there, in 1888, he proceeded almost directly to India as Viceroy; he remained in Calcutta until 1894. Upon his return, he aligned himself with the Conservative Party.
