In this portrait the Duke is portrayed as a standard bearer, clad in richly embroidered doublet and breeches, with a military encampment the distance. The design derives from an engraved series of Standard Bearers by the Dutch artist Hendrik Goltzius. The superior and lofty air of the standard bearer befit the Duke's vainglorious character.
