A lawyer by training, in 1872 Herschell was made a Queen's Counsel. Two years later he entered the House of Commons as a Liberal MP. Although not a frequent speaker, he gained a reputation as a debater that brought him to the attention of Gladstone who made him Solicitor-General in 1880.
