Born in Germany, Herkomer's family settled in England, where he studied painting at Southampton and the South Kensington Schools. He worked first as an illustrator, but soon achieved great popular success with his subject paintings depicting the lives of the poor. He turned increasingly towards portraiture in the 1880s, and became one of the most successful and wealthy portraitists of the period.
