Sir Edward Denison Ross NPG 4203a

Photograph © National Portrait Gallery, London

by Frank Kovacs

Kovacs worked by cutting straight into plaster to produce a model from which a bronze could be taken. He had completed a finished plaster study before Sir Denison Ross left for Turkey in 1939 to take up an appointment at the British embassy in Istanbul. Kovacs later sold the Gallery both the plaster and a bronze cast, and then presented a related drawing.
