Sir Andrew Fountaine first came to public notice when he accompanied Lord Macclesfield to carry the Act of Succession to the elector of Hanover in 1701. He was launched into the court circles of Europe, where he soon became a favourite. Over the next three years he made the first of his two grand tours of Europe, which is when he began collecting art.
