Zoologist; published accounts of his zoological studies in Canada and Jamaica; his most notable work was concerned with marine life which he studied in Devon; elected F.R.S. in 1856; a devout member of the Plymouth Brethren, his attempt to reconcile Darwin's theory of evolution with the Old Testament was not well received; a vivid account of life with him was given by his son Edmund in Father and Son, 1907.
