Iron manufacturer; his success in substituting coal for charcoal in the smelting of iron-ore helped him supplant most of his rivals in Coalbrookdale. He constructed a machine for boring cylinders with hitherto unknown accuracy, bringing his foundry many orders from the government for munitions during the Peninsular War. He also collaborated with James Watt in producing cylinders for steam-engines.
