Dicksee enjoyed early success with his painting, Harmony' exhibited at the Academy in 1877 and, in the following decades, exploited the popular taste both for quasi-historical subjects painted in the later Pre-Raphaelite style and the vogue for modern melodramas. He was elected an Associate of the RA in 1881 and full Academician in 1891.
