Portman was apprenticed as a salesman in his father's business, devoting his leisure to amateur dramatics with the Halifax Opera Society. He made his professional stage debut in 1924, before being engaged by Lilian Baylis for the Old Vic Company. He starred as Romeo in 1928 at the Old Vic and forged a reputation as a noted Shakespearian actor.
