by and published by Morris & Co, after Charles William Walton

Educated at Trinity College Cambridge, Shaw-Lefevre, the son-in-law of Elizabeth, the sister of Earl Grey, the Whig Prime Minister, became an MP in 1830. He was Chairman of a number of parliamentary committees and his work on these, as well as his reputation for fair-mindedness, led to him being elected Speaker of the House of Commons in 1839. He was considered to be a Speaker of distinction and was twice re-elected. By 1857, when he stood down, he was the second-longest-serving Speaker ever.
