Fielding established her career in musicals and stage revues, notably Sandy Wilson's adaptation of Ronald Firbank's novel Valmouth (1958) and Pieces of Eight (1959) written by Peter Cook and Harold Pinter. Fielding successfully combined stage roles such as Hedda in Ibsen's Hedda Gabler (1969) and Nora in A Doll's House (1970) with comedy, including performances in The Morecambe and Wise Show and Carry On films.
