Malleson's lesser known talents as dramatist, director and translator of Molière were eclipsed by his great popularity as a character actor in a wide variety of films from the hangman in Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) to Canon Chasuble in The Importance of being Earnest, a role he played both in the film (1952) and on stage at the Old Vic (1959).
