by Joseph Collyer the Younger, after J. Brown
At the death of his father in 1788 Young inherited four sugar plantations in the Caribbean and the ownership of 896 African slaves. By 1791 he had embarked on a voyage to these properties that he later wrote about in A Tour through the Several Islands of Barbados, St Vincent, Tobago, and Grenada. When he returned to Britain, he joined parliament becoming a vocal opponent to the abolition of slavery.
