published by William Richardson, after Sir Nathaniel Bacon
A prosperous landowner from East Anglia, and a relation of Francis Bacon (1561-1626), Nathaniel Bacon was also an exceptionally skilful amateur painter. Only a small group of his paintings survive, including a number of self-portraits. He was known for his extraordinary, large-scale kitchen and market scenes; a type of painting popular in the Low Countries but not produced by any other English artist.
