Mathematician. Atiyah spent most of his academic career at Cambridge, Oxford and Princeton. Positions he held included President of the Royal Society (1990-95), Chancellor of the University of Leicester (1995-2005), and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2005-8). Atiyah was best known for the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, proved with Isadore Singer in 1963, for which they were awarded the Abel prize in 2004. Atiyah was knighted in 1983, and made a member of the Order of Merit in 1992.
