Although he disapproved of and voted against the policies of Charles I, Verney's personal loyalty to the King was such that he fought for the Royalist side in the Civil War. His family was divided, as his eldest son supported Parliament. Appointed standard-bearer, Verney killed sixteen Parliamentarians at the Battle of Edgehill before meeting his own death. According to legend, his hand was later found still grasping the standard, but his body was never recovered.
