McDaniels, together with Joseph ('Run)' Simmons and Jason Mizell formed Run-DMC in 1981 in their hometown of Queen's, New York. Run-DMC. were the first hip hop group to have a gold album, to be nominated for a Grammy award and to earn a platinum record. Their music videos introduced them to a wider audience courtesy of MTV.
